The Institute of Metal Research (IMR), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) was founded in 1953. The Institute of Applied Ecology (IAE) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), formerly known as CAS Forestry and Soil Institute, was founded in 1954. Its current name was adopted in 1987. In 2001, IAE was approved as one of the National Knowledge Innovation Program pilot institutes. In 2015, it became one of the first batch of CAS-affiliated pilot "Feature Institutes" in the field of Ecological Civilization Construction.In 1987, in response to the strategic needs of CAS for strengthening the research on ecology, natural resources and environment, the institute was renamed to its current name (IAE). Its research was oriented towards terrestrial ecosystems, spanning diverse aspects of modern ecology such as Macroecology, System Ecology, Experimental Ecology, Bio-Engineering and Biotechnology.
The Shenyang Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences (SIACAS) was founded in November 1958. For more than 60 years, SIA has advanced automation science and engineering, making significant contributions to society, the economy and national security.SIA’s research focuses on robotics, intelligent manufacturing and opto-electronic information technology. As the cradle of China’s robotics technology, the institute has had more than 20 “firsts” in robotics development in China, making it the national leader.
The Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS), which is located in Qingdao, Shandong Province, was founded in 1950. It is the first ocean research institute in China. During its 70-year history, the institute has trained around 1,000 senior scientists and technicians. At present, the institute has nearly 500 scientific and technical personnel, including 175 senior research technicians and 101 doctoral instructors.
The Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocess Technology (QIBEBT), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) was cofounded by CAS, the provincial government of Shandong and the municipal government of Qingdao in 2006. On August 1, 2011, CAS and the Qingdao Municipal Government signed an agreement, marking the official launch of the second phase of construction.QIBEBT is one of China’s primary national research institutions for renewable energy and green materials, focusing mainly on research and development of the resources, technologies, products and processes for bio-based energy and materials. The Yantai Institute of Coastal Zone Research (YIC) is affiliated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and is the sole Chinese academic institution that specializes in comprehensive research of the coastal zone. YIC, which is located in the beautiful coastal city of Yantai in Shandong Province, was founded in 2006. After a three-year preparatory period, the institute passed acceptance and was formally established by CAS, the Shandong Provincial Government and Yantai Municipal Government on December 1, 2009.
