Introduction
The Shenyang Branch (SYB) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) coordinates and administers nine institutions in Liaoning and Shandong provinces affiliated with CAS: the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics; the Institute of Metal Research; the Shenyang Institute of Applied Ecology; the Shenyang Institute of Automation; Shenyang Computing Technology Company, Ltd.; SKY Technology Development Company, Ltd.; the Institute of Oceanology; the Qingdao Institute of Biomass Energy and Bioprocess Technology; and the Yantai Institute of Coastal Zone Research for Sustainable Development.
The institutes overseen by SYB have a total of 5,269 employees, including 2,340 advanced researchers. Among these researchers are 16 CAS academicians, seven Chinese Academy of Engineering academicians. The institutes focus on high-tech science including chemistry and chemical technology; materials science and engineering; industrial control and automation; robotics technology; application of computer and information technology; numerical control technology; biotechnology; energy science and technology; agricultural technology; ocean science; environmental science and engineering; and ecological engineering and environmental technology.

The institutes are home to six national key laboratories, 10 national centers for engineering research. These facilities provide a strong basis for accomplishing high-level scientific research and conducting domestic and international academic exchange and cooperation.

SYB has also established an additional 86 laboratories, centers for engineering, centers for promotion and experimental bases in cooperation with provincial and municipal government agencies. These facilities help SYB contribute to the industrialization of new technology, thus transforming traditional industries, vitalizing local economies and promoting social progress.
