The 3rd International Conference on Response and Adaptation of Terrestrial Ecosystem Carbon, Nitrogen and Water Cycles to Climate Change
The 1st Conference Announcement
1. Background
Global warming due to anthropogenic carbon emissions are already having substantial adverse climate impacts and threatening ecological balance. Reducing carbon emissions and enhancing ecosystem carbon sinks are necessary measures to achieve the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Paris Agreement targets for limiting global warming. At the General Debate of the 75th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2020, General Secretary Xi Jinping made the official announcement that China will strive to peak carbon emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060. The announcement reflects China’s responsibility in addressing climate change and also sets goals and directions for researchers conducting related research. Previous studies estimated Chinese land carbon sink of 0.19 to 1.1 Pg of carbon per year, which plays an important role in mitigating global warming. However, there are still great uncertainties in the current status, spatial pattern, promoting approaches, and potential assessment of carbon sinks in terrestrial ecosystems in China, restricting the decision-making of “carbon emission peak and carbon neutrality” in China.
Carbon, nitrogen and water cycles in terrestrial ecosystem are closely linked and coupled, together driving the key process of terrestrial ecosystem carbon balance. Global climate changes, elevated CO2 concentrations, atmospheric nitrogen deposition, and altered precipitation patterns, are strongly affecting the terrestrial ecosystem carbon sink at different levels. However, lack of knowledge on the processes of carbon-nitrogen-water coupling cycles and their regulation mechanisms had limited the assessments of carbon sink, as well as its spatiotemporal patterns and response to climate changes in terrestrial ecosystems. Therefore, it is critical to explore the response and adaptation mechanism of carbon-nitrogen-water coupling cycles to climate changes, which can not only provide the scientific basis for the regulation of carbon-nitrogen-water coupling cycles and carbon sink enhancement and emission reduction, but also help our country achieve the goal of carbon neutrality.
In this context, the 3nd International Conference on the Response and Adaption of Terrestrial Ecosystems Carbon, Nitrogen and Water Cycles to Climate Change will be held on October 8-12, 2021 in Shenyang, Liaoning, China. The purposes of this conference are to bring together the scientists in ecological science to (1) explore the pathways of enhancing terrestrial ecosystem carbon sink and potential estimation; (2) explore the key issues and future research directions of carbon-nitrogen-water coupling cycles in terrestrial ecosystems and their responses to climate change; (3) establish a new international collaboration network for elucidating the adaption and feedback mechanisms of terrestrial ecosystems to regional and global climate change.
