863 Major Project “The Technology for Production of Medium and Long-Chain Chlorinated Paraffins with Low Contents of Short-Chain Chlorinated Paraffins” Passed the Final Evaluation

On December 18th, 2013, the 863 office of the Ministry of Science and Technology conducted the final evaluation of the 863 key project “Development of Substituent Products and Technologies for POPs” in Beijing. The project was successfully passed the final evaluation.

Professor Zhengkun Yu Lab (Group 203) and Professor Jiping Chen Lab (Group 103) managed the major project “The Technology for Production of Medium and Long-Chain Chlorinated Paraffins with Low Contents of Short Chain Chlorinated Paraffins” in the key project, and it was highly appraised by the experts at the evaluation meeting. During the past three years, Yu and Chen group members examined the existing technologies for the production of chlorinated paraffins (CPs) and developed the specific technology to manufacture CPs with low contents of short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs < 0.1%) with enhancement of the production efficiency by 30%. In addition, the analytical methods (HRGC-ECNI/LRMS) for SCCPs analysis have been established by means of C10-13 SCCP monomers, and the relevant instrument has also been invented. A relevant technical and economic analysis report was finalized in which comments and suggestions are put forth to deal with the international CPs prohibition issue. Implementation of the project and application of the relevant new technology will result in important influence on the CPs industry in China. (By WU Ping)
