Prof. ZHANG Tao as Winner of ZHOU Guangzhao Foundation Award for Applied Sciences
In the opening ceremony of the 11th Annual Conference of the Chinese Science & Technology Association(CSTA) held in Chongqing on 8th September, Prof. ZHANG Tao, Director of DICP, was one of the winners to accept the first batch of "ZHOU Guangzhao Foundation Award for Applied Sciences", and the other three winners were Prof. CHIU Yong of the Tsinghua University, Prof. ZHANG Jianchun of the Quartermaster Equipment Institute of the General Logistics Department, People's Liberation Army, and Prof. ZHAO Xiangeng, Chinese Academy of Engineering Physics.
Prof. ZHOU Guangzhao, Former Vice-Chairman of the NPC (National People's Congress) Standing Committee, Honorary Chairman of the CSTA, and Member of CAS, gave an introduction on the background of the Award bearing his name. He pointed out that the granting of this Award is to encourage those Chinese scientists who are capable of transforming quickly their R&D proprietary achievements into market application or fulfilling the urgent scientific and technological needs of our country.
The ZHOU Guangzhao Foundation was sponsored by Mr. ZHONG Jianguo, a patriot entrepreneur and Chairman of Hunan Chamber of Commerce of Hong Kong, and administrated by the CSTA. And the objectives of the Foundation are to encourage Chinese scientists who have played key roles and made great contributions in those scientific, technological and sustainable areas which are very important but not yet sufficiently acnowleged, especially young and meddle-aged Chinese scientists who have worked devotedly and with great hardship in the front lines of scientific renovations.
In 2008, Prof. YANG Xueming of DICP won the Basic Research Award for Outstanding Young Scientist of the Foundation. It was decided by the Foundation that Awards for Applied Sciences and for Clinic Medical Doctors are to be granted in 2009.
