Prof. Zi-kui Liu from Pennsylvania State University Visits IMR
The recipient of 2015 Lee Hsun Lecture Series—Lee Hsun Lecture Award, Prof. Zi-Kui Liu from Pennsylvania State University visited Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMR, CAS) from September 18 to 21, 2016.
During the visit, Prof. Zi-Kui Liu delivered a lecture entitled “Computational Thermodynamics, Materials Genome and Materials Design”. He reviewed and discussed the thermodynamic fundamentals. He also demonstrated that CALPHAD (CALculations of PHAse Diagrams) method for modeling of thermodynamic properties of individual phases provides a mechanism to systematically model thermodynamics and other properties of multicomponent systems.
Prof. Zi-Kui Liu is a professor of Materials Science and Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University and editor-in-chief of CALPHAD. He obtained his BS from Central South University (China), MS from University of Science and Technology Beijing (China), PhD from Royal Institute of Technology (KTH, Sweden). His current research activities are centered on first-principles calculations, modeling of thermodynamic and kinetic properties, and their integration in understanding defects, phase stability, and phase transformations, and designing and tailoring materials processing and properties. Prof. Liu founded the NSF Center for Computational Materials Design and served its director from 2005 to 2014. Prof. Liu is a Fellow and a member of Board of Trustees of ASM International and was a member of the TMS Board of Directors. He received the ASM J. Willard Gibbs Phase Equilibria Award, the TMS Brimacombe Medalist Award, and the ACers Spriggs Phase Equilibria Award for his academic achievements.
