Prof. Stefan Blügel from Forschungszentrum Julich Visits IMR
The recipient of 2015 Lee Hsun Lecture Series—Lee Hsun Lecture Award, Prof. Stefan Blügel from Forschungszentrum Julich (FZJ) visited Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMR, CAS) from April 18 to 22, 2016.
During the visit, Prof. Stefan Blügel delivered a lecture entitled “Computing Solids: past, present, future”. He demonstrated the indispensable role of computing solids in the history of magnetic storage and spintronics. He also emphasized the marvelous contribution that Density Functional Theory (DFT) has made in the field of computational physics, computational chemistry and computational materials science. Prof. Stefan Blügel was also invited to deliver a seminar lecture entitled “Topologically protected Spin Textures at Metal Surfaces” and conducted academic exchange with researchers from the Magnetism and Magnetic Materials Division.
During the visit, Prof. Stefan Blügel also made a lab tour to the Magnetism and Magnetic Materials Division, Advanced Carbon Division and Technical Support Division of Shenyang National Laboratory for Materials Sciences.
Prof. Stefan Blügel, director of Institute Quantum Theory of Materials at Forschungszentrum Jülich, is the top scientist in the area of solid state. He focuses on low dimensional systems and nano-structures such as magnetic multilayer, ultrathin magnetic films, nano-magnets, semiconductor (element IV, III-V, II-VI) and transport properties. He also performs atomic-scale computer simulations to understand complex properties and processes in solids of interfacial structures and nano-structures of a type relevant to basic science.
