Prof. David Tománek from Michigan State University Visits IMR

Prof. David Tománek of Michigan State University visited Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMR, CAS) from May 15th to May 29th, 2015 as the recipient of 2014 Lee Hsun Lecture Series—Research Award.

Giving a lecture entitled “Progress in 2D electronic materials beyond graphene”, Prof. Tománek introduced the recent research progress by his group on mechanical energy storage in nanotube and structural multitude of low-dimensional single-element phosphorus, and demonstrated the potential applications of phosphorene in electronic and optoelectronic devices.

The visit was mainly received by Magnetism and Magnetic Materials Division of IMR. Both sides made a deep discussion on black phosphorus and the characterization of its oxidized structures by combining X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and equivalent core approximation in particular. Future collaboration was also planned during this visit.

Prof. David Tománek has been focusing on the development and application of numerical techniques to study structural, electronic, transport and optical properties of surfaces, low-dimensional systems and nanostructures. Computer simulations in his research group have been performed to address a multitude of topics including physical properties of fullerenes, nanotubes, nanowires, metallic and magnetic clusters. His group predicted for the first time that carbon nanotubes have ultrahigh thermal conductivity which attracted world-wide attention and follow-up studies by many others. He has published a monograph “Science and application of nanotubes” as editor-in-chief of Springer. International Conferences on the Science and Application of Nanotubes was established by him and has now become a renowned international conference in the relevant research field on the yearly basis. In 2008, he was awarded the Japan Carbon Award for his Life-Time Achievement.
