The Recipient of LEE HSUN Young Scientist Lecture Series, Prof. Artem R. Oganov from State University of New York at Stony Brook Visits IMR

Prof. Artem R. Oganov from State University of New York at Stony Brook visited Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMR, CAS) as the recipient of LEE HSUN Young Scientist Lecture Series Award from July 16 to July 22.

Prof. Oganov gave a lecture entitled “Computational Materials Discovery: New Developments and Surprising Discoveries” after the LEE HSUN Young Scientist Lecture Series ceremony. During this visit, Prof. Oganov had several comprehensive discussions with staff from Materials Process Modeling Division and Titanium Alloys Division about computational materials design. He also gave a lecture entitled “Structure prediction with USPEX: How and why it works?” and had an in-depth exchange of views with young researchers and students of IMR about crystal structure and performance prediction.

Prof. Artem R. Oganov has developed a number of breakthrough methodologies, which have enabled practical prediction of large andcomplex crystal structures, including both inorganic and organic materials.Oganov’s simulation code USPEX is one of the best evolutionary algorithms which can predict stable crystalstructures and its extension to molecular crystals, and simultaneous prediction of stable chemical compounds and their structures.

Prof. Artem R. Oganov was elected as the president of International Union of Crystallography (Crystallography of Materials) for his trailblazing contributions in the field of Crystal Structures’ Prediction. He has published over 130 papers on academic journals including Nature and Science so far.He also serves as Editor Board Member in several international academic journals.
