Professor Carsten Maple from University of Bedfordshire Visited SIA

Invited by Liu Lianqing, researcher from Robotics Laboratory, Professor Carsten Maple, Vice Chancellor for Research and Enterprise, University of Bedfordshire in United Kingdom visited Shenyang Institute of Automation (SIA), the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) on September 4th 2013, giving a report titled Nanotechnologies for Future Cities. Maple is also a chief scientist for the Sino-Euro Robot R&D Platform project under the 7th Framework Programme (FP7) of the European Union.

In his report, Maple introduced application of nanotechnologies in future city construction, aging of population and energy acquiring. He pointed out that, nanotechnologies and applications can bring revolutions to many industries. After the report, Maple made discussions with researchers and postgraduate students from the department.

Serving as Pro Vice Chancellor for Research and Enterprise, University of Bedfordshire, UK, Maple is also a Fellow of the British Computer Society (FBCS) and a Chartered IT Practitioner (CITP). He is editor/guest editor for several international journals such as International Journal of Grid Computing, International Journal of Modeling, Identification and Control. He has been chairman for a number of international conferences such as IEEE International Conference on Parallel Computing, International Conference on Information Visualisation, and International Symposium on Applications of Graph Theory. He has published nearly 200 papers internationally.

SIA is one of the five Chinese institutes participating in the Sino-Euro Robot R&D Platform project. Researchers from SIA are mainly in charge of the basic theories, key technologies and application platform construction of nano-robot and nano sensors under the project.
