Invited by the Center for Space Automation Technology of Shenyang Institute of Automation (SIA), the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Professor Shen Weimin, director of Polymorphic Robotics Laboratory of the University of Southern California (USC) visited SIA on July 5th, 2013. During his visit, Shen made a report at the Robot Frontier Forum, titled Self-Reconfigurable Robots and Digital Hormones.

In his report, Shen introduced the progress made by his research team in reconfigurable robot, as well as its potential application environment, solved key technology and challenges. Through examples, he elaborated the effective usage of digital hormones in the control of self-reconfigurable robot. After the report, Sang Zigang, deputy director general of SIA conferred the certificate of “Robot Frontier Forum” to Shen.

Accompanied by Wang Tianran, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), Shen visited the State Key Laboratory of Robotics and Shenyang SIASUN Robot & Automation Co., Ltd. He also made discussions with researchers from Center for Space Automation Technology on technological issues. Shen spoke highly of the research progress achieved by SIA researchers and wished to conduct cooperation and academic exchanges with SIA in the future.

As an internationally well-known expert in intelligent robot, Shen serves as the director of Polymorphic Robotics Laboratory of USC, Los Angeles. He is also the associate director of Center for Robotics and Embedded Systems of USC. Shen graduated from the Institute of Automation, CAS in 1983, with a MS degree. He obtained Master of Science degree in computer science from Carnegie Mello University in the United States in 1986, and pursued PhD degree in computer science in Carnegie Mellon University, with Professor Herbert A. Simon, a Nobel Price Winner as his advisor. His research interests include self-reconfigurable and transformation system, autonomous robot, machine learning, artificial intelligence and life science.
